COME GET IT: New, Free Weezy
Lil Wayne [Dwayne Carter, Jr.] was sent to federal prison almost exactly a year ago, on March 8, 2010. He was released on November 4, 2010. Since then we’ve seen one major single in “Six Foot, Seven Foot” [another hit produced by Bangladesh] and a relevant effort I heard first on the radio around Super Bowl weekend, “Green and Yellow” [makes me wonder how quick it took to get that one from his brain to the mixer]. Let’s note that the year he made a song about Kobe, the Lakers got a championship ring, and now Weezy’s winning streak continues with the Packers.
In the September while he was in prison, his album “I Am Not A Human Being” fell, including Bill Gates, a song I posted on my Famous Names Mix, appropriately. On top of those jays, I found one more gem that needed to be spread off his new mixtape, “The Road to C4” -- the song “Set It Off Tonight”, a club song with a solid verse contribution from Weezy. Lastly, “Su Woo” featuring The Game is perfect for fans of Tha Carter II era, such as myself, with its minimal horns and drums duo and slick, pre-auto-tuned rap. Don’t say he’s lost touch of that same lyricism he had in ’05 after hearing Su Woo.
Unfortunately, the release date for The Carter IV has been pushed to Winter 2011, obviously upsetting for the avid fan. But from the most prolific musician, technically, of his generation, I can’t complain about his recent output. Here’s 5 songs which highlight this last long year for Weezy.
1. Six Foot, Seven Foot feat. Cory Gunz
2. Green and Yellow
3. Bill Gates (Remix) feat. Busta Rhymes
4. Set It Off Tonight feat. Sam Salter
5. Su Woo feat. The Game
